What is Deep Work?

Deep work is professional activity performed in a state of distraction-free concentration that pushes your cognitive capabilities to their limit. These efforts create new value, improve your skills, and are hard to replicate.

It's the opposite of shallow work: non-cognitively demanding, logistical-style tasks, often performed while distracted. Shallow work doesn't create much new value and is easy to replicate.

1. The Monastic Philosophy

Maximize deep efforts by eliminating or radically minimizing shallow obligations. This might mean working remotely, declining meetings, and batching communication. Best for those with clear, high-value priorities.

2. The Bimodal Philosophy

Divide your time, dedicating some clearly defined stretches to deep pursuits and leaving the rest open to everything else. For example, deep work in the mornings, shallow work in the afternoons.

3. The Rhythmic Philosophy

Make deep work a regular habit. Same time, same place, every day. This approach works well with human nature: we are creatures of habit.

4. The Journalistic Philosophy

Fit deep work wherever you can into your schedule. This requires the ability to switch into deep mode on command—a skill that takes practice to develop.

Ritualize Your Deep Work

Create a routine that signals to your brain it's time for deep work:

Embrace Boredom

Don't seek distraction at every idle moment. The ability to concentrate is a muscle that atrophies if not trained. Practice being bored to strengthen your focus.

Quit Social Media

Or at least treat it as a tool, not a default. Ask: would using this service significantly help my career or personal life? If not, eliminate it.

Drain the Shallows

Ruthlessly minimize shallow work. Batch email. Skip unnecessary meetings. Say no to commitments that don't align with your core goals.

Building Your Deep Work Practice

Start small. Commit to one hour of deep work tomorrow. Turn off all notifications. Close unnecessary tabs. Work on your most important task. Notice how different it feels from your usual workflow.

Gradually increase your deep work capacity. Track your deep work hours. Aim for 3-4 hours per day—beyond that, diminishing returns set in for most people.

The Cost of Distraction

Every time you check email or social media, you pay a "context switching cost." It takes an average of 23 minutes to fully refocus after an interruption. Two minutes of checking Twitter can cost you half an hour of productivity.
